"Hi Dad."

He had just closed the door behind him. You and your brothers had been staying at the psychic Missouri Moseley's house, while John had been hunting for the weekend. You were holding your favorite teddy in one hand and a pistol in the other. He didn't even know how you got your hands on it seeing as it was one of his old.

"Why aren't you asleep?" he asked as he took the gun from your hand. It worried him that you had been waiting for someone or something to burst through the door. At the same time, he was amazed what you were willing to do at the tender age of four. However, you had always been an early bloomer compared to your twin Dean.

"Miss Moseley told me that I should always listen to the bad feeling in my tummy. So I did."

John chuckled and ruffled your hair with his free hand. At least you didn't question his tired look or the bandage around his arm, which was still slightly wet. After carefully placing the gun out of reach from curious little hands, he went to pick you up. A small yawn escaped your lips as he went upstairs to tug you in.

"Hi Dad."

You had been eagerly waiting for your father to come home. Sam had been put to bed early and Dean was visiting a friend he had made at school. You, on the other hand, had used most of the day on organizing the guns and even made an attempt at creating a police badge. Never had an excited smile left a face as quick as yours. The smell of old whiskey and sleep deprivation was enough for you to put away your fine collection and instead reach for a blanket for your dad. After making sure he wasn't moving from the chair you climbed into Sam's bed for some hours of sleep. John would usually be cranky in the morning and that was no fun in a car.

"Hi Dad."

It was nothing but a small whisper as you tried not to look him in the eyes. The two of you didn't share a glance until John had signed the papers the police officer gave him. His eyebrows were furrowed and there was a bit to much pressure on the pen. While John was surely disappointed in you, he didn't let the police take care of you. He didn't leave you behind like he did with Dean that one time. This, in turn, made you stuff your hands deep into your pockets and you held your head low.

"I told you," John muttered under his breath as you left the building. Time after time John had warned all three children to stay out of trouble, but of course, that was far from reality. School, girls, monsters, or the Law. No restriction was too big or too small not to be broken. And it was taking its toll on him.

"You are too clever for this crap. You know that I need you for this hunt. Sam is too small and Dean will just fuck it up again," he said without looking at you. Even now it was hard to keep up with John's long footsteps and they didn't become any shorter from his anger.

"I know. Sorry, Dad."

He took a moment to look at you and a hint of a smile reached his lips: "Next time aim for his knees and don't uppercut his nose. You want to make a point - not kill the guy."

"Hi Dad."

You had been hunting alone for a week trying to take down a group of werewolves on your own. John had found you prepared enough to take them on yourself without any backup. It was a small clan after all and he had seen you hunt them before. After finally calling in and reporting a successful mission, John had asked you to meet him at a rundown motel a few states over. It became a long trip with busses, walking, and a couple of car rides from strangers (some more pleasant than others). John was sitting on top of a dark blue truck you didn't recognize. You lifted an eyebrow at his smiling face.

"So the hunt ended well. Guess there ain't more I can teach you. But I can help with one last thing."

He tossed you a set of keys that you hardly caught seeing as you were carrying two large duffle bags with all of your belongings. After a few seconds of silence, you placed the bags on the ground.

"Are you serious? That's mine?" you asked with awe. John's grin made him seem younger by many years.

"Yeah, it's all yours. But you better be careful, she is brand new and yet to have any damage done. Though I have the feeling it won't last long."

Your grin rivaled that of your father. Dean left the shop with Sam in tow carrying all of the groceries. They gave you a big thumbs up. This was an occasion to be celebrated and you knew just how.

"Hi Dad."

Your hand was tightly clenched around the shaft of the sword. Blood still trailed down it as you fastened it to your belt. Combined with your sweaty skin and cocky smile, it certainly made an impression. You had been hunting for a creature that it had taken you weeks to get close to. Before trying to take it on yourself you had called John in for support. Just in case things didn't go as planned. The griffin in front of your feet had put up a fight, but like any other monster you ended up as the victor.

It was at times like this that John knew you were his most prominent successor. He knew that should he fail you would take on his mission of finding the yellow-eyed demon. Sam and Dean needed each other; you would be fine on your own. Even when the rest was dead and gone, you would be standing tall carrying on the family business.

"I've just had an eight-hour drive down here and you didn't even need my help."

"Maybe I'll save some for you next time, old man."

"Hi Dad."

The lifeless body that once had belonged to John Winchester looked far more peaceful than you could remember your father to ever have been. Sam and Dean had decided not to approach you as you seemed to be in deep thought. They had called an hour earlier telling you that Dad officially was gone. Sure, you knew all three had ended up in the hospital because of some possessed truck driver and you knew they had been hunting the yellow-eyed demon before that. John had called early in the morning to inform you. It was his way to still keep some contact with you every now and then.

"...you are not exactly making it easy for us to give you a hunter's funeral. It will take some convincing, but we will get it done. Just the way you taught us. I guess, you are with Mom now. That is what I'm supposed to hope for, right? But does any of us know if hunters go to Heaven? With all the blood and killings don't we deserve to go to Hell?"

You let a hand run through your hair as you walked across the room. It was hard to believe he was gone. Most couldn't imagine their parents dying. Sure, you lost your mother a long time ago, but that only added to the thought of John living well into old age. There was still so much he needed to teach you. Dean and Sam would be fine. They were the ones who found him when he was gone. In your defense, you didn't even know he hadn't been home. Being independent and kind of a lone wolf had its pros and cons. It had been over a month since you last had seen your dad.

"Sam and Dean will hunt down the yellow-eyed bastard. I'll try to help, but there a ton of monsters out there and it is my duty to take them down. I have faith in those two knuckleheads. Dean won't screw up this time and Sam is more ready than ever. They make a pretty good team. You raised us well."

"Hi Dad."

John didn't expect to see you standing there in the open door. Not so soon at least. When John had arrived Mary had been there to greet him, since they would be sharing a heaven. It seemed he would be the one to greet you. To him, you hadn't changed one bit in appearance since the last time he saw you. Your curious look reminded him of a time long gone, where the biggest care was if he would be able to tug you into bed before 8 PM. John embraced you without any intention of letting go. For the first time in years, you let yourself cry.

"Hi (y/n)."
I'm slowly growing fond of writing Unisex!Readers. There will definitely be more.
